What are buddy passes & travel partners?
4 min read
Buddy passes and nominated travel partners let airline staff share standby benefits with friends. Learn how they work, priority, and taxes.
Airline staff travel isn't only for employees. Most airlines let staff share their benefit with people outside their immediate family through buddy passes or by nominating a travel partner. This is how a friend with no airline job gets to fly standby too.
What is a buddy pass?
A buddy pass is a standby travel privilege an employee can give to a friend. The friend flies space-available, just like the employee, but usually at a lower boarding priority — buddy-pass travelers typically clear after employees and registered family members. Buddy passes are often limited in number per year.
Travel partners & registered companions
Many airlines also let an employee nominate a travel partner (sometimes called a registered companion or friend) who gets ongoing benefits, often at a higher priority than a one-off buddy pass. Rules — who qualifies, how often you can change them — vary by airline.
Do buddy passes cost money?
The pass itself may be free or low-cost, but travelers usually still pay taxes, fees, and any fare amount for each flight, just like other non-revs. On ID or ZED interline trips, the relevant fare applies. So “free flights” aren't always entirely free.
Priority: manage expectations
Because guests and buddy-pass holders sit lower in the clearance order, they're more likely to get bumped on busy flights. If you're traveling on someone's buddy pass, pick low-load flights, stay flexible, and always have a backup.
Etiquette matters
When you fly on an employee's benefit, you represent them and their airline. Follow the dress code, be polite to gate agents and crew, and never complain about a non-rev seat — good behavior protects the employee's travel privileges.
