10 tips for flying non-rev
6 min read
Practical standby tips: check loads early, have backup flights, dress the part, stay flexible, and travel light. Fly smarter as a non-rev.
Flying non-rev is one of the best perks in aviation — but it rewards preparation. These ten tips will help you clear more flights and stress less on standby.
1. Check the loads early and often
Start watching loads days before you travel, then re-check the night before and at the gate. Loads move constantly.
2. Always have a backup flight
Never pin your trip to a single flight. Know the next two or three departures — and alternate routings through different hubs — before you leave home.
3. Compare open seats to the standby list
Open seats alone don't tell you your odds. A flight with 10 open seats and 15 non-revs listed is tighter than it looks. Weigh seats against the number already listed and your priority.
4. Fly off-peak
Mid-week, early-morning, and late-night flights clear far more easily than Friday evenings, Sunday nights, and holidays. Flexibility is your superpower.
5. Consider a higher ID fare on busy days
On a full flight, paying for ID75 instead of ID90 can move you up the clearance order. Sometimes a slightly higher fare is what gets you on.
6. Travel light
Carry-on only when you can. It lets you switch flights and gates fast, and you're never waiting on checked bags if you clear at the last second.
7. Dress the part
Many airlines still have a staff-travel dress code, and you're representing the company. Smart-casual is a safe bet — and it helps if you're hoping for a cabin upgrade.
8. Be early and be listed
Confirm you're listed correctly and check in within the required window. Get to the gate early so you don't miss your name at clearance.
9. Be gracious at the gate
Gate agents are doing you a favor. A patient, friendly non-rev who knows the process makes their day easier — and that goodwill goes a long way.
